How would you improve Olympic Plaza?
Following an announcement late last year that the city was undertaking a process to update and rebuild the downtown square, the city today launched a website soliciting ideas from Calgarians.
The initiative is being undertaken by the city, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, Arts Commons (the former Epcor Centre for the Arts, which abuts the plaza) and the plan is, at this point, wide open. The city says it’s open to all ideas.
“We’re seeking public input on amenities, activities and features citizens would like to see in the area around and including Olympic Plaza,” the website says. “This engagement will inform a programming guide for further design work being led by Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.”
The plaza was built for the Olympics and was the site where many winners were awarded their medals. Since then, the plaza is mostly used by downtown lunchers in the warmer months, ice skaters in the winter, and the not-so-rare ne’er do wells who give the spot a reputation as a place to avoid after dark.
The website asks users what they like about the plaza and what they’d like to see added.
