Tuesday marks a very big day in the development of the east end of Calgary’s downtown.
A whole bunch of city celebrities will be on hand for the grand opening of the 4th Street S.E. underpass which links East Village to the Stampede Park area.
Officials from the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation to the Calgary Flames, the Calgary Stampede, the Cantos Music Foundation and City Hall, including Mayor Naheed Nenshi, will be on hand to celebrate this important development.
It’s important for current and future business in both districts as the link will make it easier for people travelling in either direction.
East Village is in the midst of a huge mixed-use real estate development which will transform the area directly behind Calgary City Hall.
The Stampede is moving along on its plan to create a main street, primarily retail, area leading into the park’s main entrance. The 4th Street S.E. underpass basically will join this area with East Village as an accessible travel route.
And with that important initiative, it just might spur more development in the area around the Stampede.
Many years ago developers had grandiose plans for that part of the city because of its proximity to the downtown core. But for various reasons those plans went astray.
The opening of the 4th Street S.E. underpass, and the continued development plans in East Village and the Stampede, just might be the spark needed for more projects to come to fruition in the area.
